“Smile for the Camera” was inspired by a real family portrait of four siblings. I was captivated and moved to create a painting of this photo because of its peculiar and ominous excellence. The unresponsive gaze, awkward dress, and motionless pose of the children leave the viewer feeling uncomfortable and curious. The fictional styling of the portrait unintentionally brought forth, what appears to be, a very real emotion present in these four children. Put on display with their thermal underwear and accessories, these kids are unhappy and unimpressed.
